Auto Insurance Claims: Teen Insurance Issues, insurance issues, licensed drivers

Question
Hi,

I am a minor from Colorado. I just got my license but I do not have a car as of yet. Also, I have not been added to my parent's insurance policy. My question is, am I legally allowed to drive their car w/ their permission? If I were to get in an accident would I be covered and could I be charged w/ drivng without insurance? Thanks!

Answer
Hi John,

First, let me congratulate you for being mature enough to look into this before driving your parents vehicle.

Most insurance companys require that ALL licensed drivers in the household be listed on the policy and that the appropriate premium is paid. So your parents will have to call their insurance company to have you listed as a driver BEFORE there would be any coverage. If you drive the car with out doing this there would be no coverage and your parents would be personally financially responsible for any property damage or bodily injury that you may cause.

Your parents cost for insurance will likely go up substantially when you are added to the policy. I would suggest the you offer to do some type of extra work or chores to help offset this additional expense.

I hope this helps
