Auto Insurance Claims: Totalled out, minus deductible, insurance

Question
After a recent accident our insurance has decided to total out our car.  It's valued at $2200.  They're paying the $2200 minus our $500 deductible, or $1700.  Is this right?  Why are they subtracting the deductible?

Answer
Hi J,
If you were at fault in the accident, you are always required to pay your deductible.  Your insurance is simply deducting it from the settlement instead of having you pay the $500 and then they pay you $2,200.
