Land Rover Repair: STARTING, dash lights, robust security

Question
Hi John. I have a 1996 Disco 1. Car been starting normally all day today but all of a sudden engine won't crank. As I turned the key the immobiliser light extinguished and no other dash lights illuminated-dead. Over the past fortnight the immobiliser would not lock the drivers door ,nor would the hazards flash 3 times when locking with the immobiliser. The front cabin light only illuminates when the passenger door is opened and the immobiliser still locks and unlocks the doors as described earlier. ie does not lock the drivers door. I have not started with any fault checking yet. Sounds like could be the immobiliser. Please advise where to start trouble shooting. many thanks

Answer
In the USA, if the immobilizer locked the car you would need the specialized LR test systems, like Autologic or T4 to reset it so the car runs.  In Africa you may be able to reprogram the engine control unit to use what they call non-robust security which removes the immobilizer from the system, so its breakdown will not prevent running of the vehicle.  Since immobilizers vary around the world (LR has three systems and I only know the one for USA) you need local knowledge to go farther
