Auto Insurance Claims: Chiropractor vs. physical therapy, chiropractor, bodily injury

Question
I was injured in a car accident on May 4th.  There was almost $3,000 damage to my vehicle, which I decided to handle property damage on my own but since this is the first accident I've been in and I was hurt, I decided to hire a lawyer to handle my bodily injury claim.  I was referred to a chiropractor due to pain in my lower back, neck and right shoulder.  Since then, I have had family members tell me that I should have gone to a physical therapist instead because insurance companies don't want to deal with chiropractors and that chiropractors get a large amount of whatever settlement is received.  I am healing very well under the care of the chiropractor but now I am uneasy about how the insurance company will respond to my being under chiropractic care and I'm also worried that when it's all said and done once I pay the lawyer and the chiropractor I will have nothing left in my settlement.  Do you have any information about how this works?

Answer
Hi April,

There is nothing wrong with treating with a chiropractor.  Of course, he will have to be paid when the claim settles. Further, you can not just go to physical therapy. You would have to be sent to physical therapy by a treating doctor.  So then you would have a doctors charges as well as physical therapy charges.  If you have concerns about how much your claim will settle for and how much will be left for you, you should be directing those questions to your attorney.

I hope this helps
