Auto Insurance Claims: claim against others insurance, independent documentation, police report

Question
My friend rear-ended a car at a traffic light, barely tapped it.  She got out with the other driver and they both acknowledged that there was no damage to either car.  She asked if he wanted to call the cops and he did not but he said "well, what if I have to go to the doctor or something".  So, again, she asked about calling the police.  He did not want to call the police.  They did exchange insurance information.  Should a police report have been filed?  And, can he file a claim against her insurance without a police report?  Is there any steps she should take?

Answer
HI Jana,

Any time you are involved in an incident, it is a good idea to contact the police so that there is independent documentation of the circumstances as well as the damage or lack thereof.

At this point it would be a good idea to have your friend contact his insurance company to provide an "information only" report. He/she should tell them that both parties agreed there was no damage to either vehicle.  That way if the other person does try to make a claim later, it will already be on record.

I hope this helped.
