Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: air cond. filter/dryer, air cond, dryer filter

Question
is there a diagosis for air cond. dryer/filter being bad, or should it be changed when compressor is?

Answer
Theoretically if a system has never been compromised by failure or exposure to ambient atmosphere the dryer/filter will never go bad.

In order to qualify for warranty a dryer must be installed with a new compressor.  They will plug up with debris from compressor failure (metal filings).
In most cases a dryer is inexpensive (sometimes tough to replace though) and makes for the perfect complete service.  Keep in mind you must vacuum system after opening or the desiccant in the dryer will be contaminated.  You can not get the moisture out of a desiccant once it has absorbed it.
There has been the odd case where I have reused one.  Sometimes you just can't get them off without damaging other parts.  If a compressor is being replaced because of leakage or a bad clutch you can sometimes reuse the filter dryer if need be.

Sorry for late replies.  This is my busy season and its 40d Celcius outside.  I will get around to answering every question but it may take me a few hours. I typically book 12-15 cars a day right now and its getting overwhelming.  Many electrical problems and difficult to find leaks!
