Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Rear A/C, conversion vans, chevy express

Question
I have a 2003 Chevy Express Conversion Van. The rear a/c
is a Proair system. It has developed a leak which is effecting the front a/c. Can I cap or plug the rear a/c
lines where they run to the rear system without fear of damage? Will this work?

Answer
Ron,
If you could possibly give me a bit more info.
On the conversion vans, often times the rear A/C is completely seperate from the front A/C. A differetn system altogether, typically mounted in a shallow overhead compartment like a miniature R.V. These are usually ran off of a 12V system coming from yor alternator.
Is this the system that you have, or is it in fact also ran by the compressor under the hood?
I just want to clarify that before I get in too deep.
If it is one and the same system...
You can close off the rear evaporator and have the system disregard it completely. However... in order to do this, you will need to recover the refrigerant and crimp and solder the line leading to the rear as well as the line coming back to the front. (Preferably at the junctions, or close to them, that they split from the front piping.) Unless you can find a plug that is designed to do this. ProAir may have something for just this occasion if you look them up.
But in my opinion you would be better off to have the leak found and repaired. It should run into the same amount of money and in the end it will cause your compressor to cycle on alot less in comparison to trying to cool the entire cabin with just the front evaporator. It won't hurt the system to be without it, but it will just make it work a bit harder and longer to cool the space.
I hope I was able to help a bit. If so please remember to rate this answer. If I can do anything further now or inthe future, please do not hesitate to ask. Good luck in everything and take care.
