Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: freon and oil charge, oil charge, best bet

Question
I'm restoring a 71 Corvette.  Can't find the specs on freon chg and total oil required.  Can you help?

Answer
Don,
Nice pick on a project car. As for yor refrigerant and oil charge...
Being that A/C didn't really become standard on the vette until '79-'80, there is not alot of information on it. And alot of the kits that are on the previous years are aftermarket sets.
I understand it probably isn't there, but check your radiator mount/shroud and under your hood itself, there may still be a sticker that will be able to tell you. If it is there, it will indicate the amount for R-12. When charging it back up, you only put 80% of the R12 amount, if you are using R134a.
But... charging your refrigerant is not a problem. You can charge it up by pressures. If you need information on how to do this or what the pressures should be, do a follow-up when you are ready to start and send me the temperature of the area around the car. as for the oil charge... This should be labeled somewhere on the compressor. If it is not, and you can tell me the manufaturer and model of the compressor, I may be able to find the information that way. Typically, this will be in the neighborhood of 4-8 ounces.
I will continue to look around for you, but the best bet would probably be to find a vette restoration forum and gather information from the minds within there.
Thank you for the wuestion. I will contiunue to search, and if I am able to come up with something, I will follow up on this response. If you found this answer at all useful, please remember to rate this answer. Thank you again and good luck in everything.
