Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1986 Fiero GT ac cycle, pontiac fiero gt, 1986 pontiac fiero

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT V6 and would like to know how much time should there be between ac cycles.

ANSWER: Dave,
First... nice ride. I had been looking for a project fiero GT for some time, then came across a nice deal on a 91 300ZX that I couldn't pass up. But one day.........

Ok, down to business. Your A/C compressor cycling is going to vary even if it is properly charged. It should remain on until the cab reaches the desired temperature as determined by your thermostat (A/C thermostat, not coolant thermostat) Once the desired temp is reached, it will shut down the compressor and turn it back on as the cab temp raises. There is typically a 4-7 degree differential built in to these thermostats between the on cycle and off cycle.
So, if your windows are down naturally the compressor should remain on, because the thermostat will never be made to open up. If your cab is tight, and it is in the shade on a hot day it will cycle more than if it is a cool night. Know what I mean?
If your compressor is cycling at frequent intervals at idle (5-10 seconds) it is typically an indicator of a low refrigerant charge.

Thank you for the question, I hope I was of some assistance. If I can do anything further during this process, or in the future, please do not hesitate to ask. If you found this response to be of some assistance, please remember to rate this answer. Thanks again and good luck in everything.

QUESTION: Thanks for your prompt response. I am using a refrigerant called Enviro-safe (google it). It rplaces the CFC-12 and requires about a third the power to run the compressor. My Fiero has 45,000 origonal miles, like new and I love it. My ac is cycling at 5 to 10 seconds so you've answered.

Answer
Dave,
I've heard of it, and just like the red-tek version and all of the other R-12 replacements... I am kind of wary about them. One reason is because unless you have retro-fitted the vehicle for an HFC refrigerant, the old mineral oil inside the compressor does not mix well with them. All HFC refrigerants require a PAG or ESTER synthetic oil. But if it has been working well for this long.... Just know that it could lead to problems later down the road.

I also had to answer this, even though it wasn't a question, to take it out of my question cue, allexperts.com frowns on it if we let anything sit in there for a period of time.

And finally... if interested in selling...... you know where to find me. A fiero (especially the 6 cylinder) with mileage like that is a rare find.  Good luck with it and take care of it. There are alot of "kid collectors" out there that will try to snatch it up and turn it into a kit car in a heartbeat.  Nice to hear of one staying original. Well done.
