Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1998 Cadillac DeVille A/C, c programmer, cadillac deville

Question
Hello,

Last summer, I spent a few hundred bucks having a new (OEM) A/C compressor installed on my 98 DeVille.  The A/C blew cold for a single day, then I got nothing but hot air.  I returned it to the mechanic (reputable and trustworthy) and he could not find the problem.  He said that the compressor worked and that the refrigerant was full and not leaking.  He sent me to an A/C specialist. The A/C guy said that the problem was not with the compressor or any other moving parts, but probably electrical. He couldn't analyze it more because he didn't have the proper  equipment. I was told that the compressor, belts, clutch, orifice tube, and other mechanical parts replaced are in in good order.

Another local electrical station mechanic checked it out and said that the the compressor kicks on for a couple of seconds, and then stops. He says that the A/C programmer and the "Power Train Control Module" needed to be replaced to the tune of about $1000.00.  I wondering why it couldn't be that the compressor is bad? There's a big money difference between the two parts, and the compressor is still under warranty. I know that there is an A/C programmer part, but I'm not sure about this so-called module.  What could be the problem?  Is this other mechanic being straight with me?

  Any help would be appreciated.

                     Thanks,

Answer
Your problem could be either the:

PCM or the Programmer.

First you would need to access the computer to see if there were any ACM or PCM codes stored in the computer. If there are your A/C will not function correctly also.

I could e-mail you diagnostic procedures on how to access the computer codes and diagnostic charts to diagnose your A/C problems, But your looking at about 20 pages of information and pictures.
