Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: How much freon do I add?, dodge truck, professional facility

Question
Hello Autohelp,
I have a 2001 dodge truck and the AC quit working a little over a month ago. I hope that it is just a leak. I want to add Freon and try to find the leak. How can I make sure I do not over or under fill the system, (I think I can borrow gauges)? Should I add any dye, oil, stop leak, etc and how much? Do you recommend any brand names? Thank you.

James

Answer
You can add 3 cans of FREON to the system. One that has dye in it and the other 2 without dye.

However the most common fault for the leak is the EVAPORATOR of which Dodge is FAMOUS for having problems with.

You have to remove the dash assembly inside the vehicle to get at the EVAP and this is a very very complex 8 hour project and is NOT recommended to be done by a novice due to the numerous re-adjustments that MUST be made AFTER the system amd dash are re-assembled.

Your looking at $80.00 to $1,000.000 to have a professional facility perform this complex task.

You have to replace the accumulator, orfice tube (expansion valve), Flush the entire A/c system. Reassemble the system with all the new components, Install the EXACT amount of refrigerant oil, Evacuate the system, and install the the EXACT amount of freon.
