Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: AC Clutch, electrical schematics, center bolt

Question
The center bolt holding the clutch to the ac compressor fell out of my 99 V8 Explorer.  I need to use a shim set to maintain a .0022" gap: I don't fully understand how.  What I've been warned is to make sure the pulley turns after I get everything back together.  Apparantly the compressor may have failed and sheared the bolt off.  If that's the case, I'm not supposed to try to run the AC or defroster.  Can you give me a few words of wisdom about what I'm attempting to fix? Expecially concerning the test to determine if the compressor is OK before I turn the AC on.

Thanks,

Alan
