Auto body repair & detailing: cracked bumper

Question
Is it possible for my rear bumper to have cracked in the extreme cold we are having here in Columbus Ohio?  I had an aftermarket bumper put on last July and this morning saw it had cracked and a piece is missing.  Guy who put it on said I had to have hit something or someone hit me.  There are no scuffs marks or dents in the bumper and no other visible sign that someone hit me.

Answer
Hi Jenny!....As colder temperatures will absolutely affect the strength, integrity, and flexibility of any material, (especially plastic), it will usually take another circumstance to cause damage. For myself, living in   Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the temperatures here in winter, have dropped as low a -58F with the wind chill factor. Even in those temperatures, I can honestly say I have never heard of a bumper cover cracking on it's own. Sorry.

That being said, if your vehicle was recently washed, and water was still on the bumper cover before the temperature dropped drastically, this could very remotely lead to a crack in the cover. Being that you mentioned that a piece was missing, would lead me to agree with the person that said the bumper cover would have to have been hit. Unfortunately, it could be something as simple as someone just giving it a kick.

Hope this helps you out....Please feel free to drop me another line if you have any other questions or concerns....Thanks....Dave.
