Auto body repair & detailing: bumper scratches, light scratches, 1 x1

Question
Auto body repair & detailing: bumper scratches, light scratches, 1 x1
red mustang damage
I have a 2001 Ford Mustang v6 E9 color code that was swiped in the rear bumper cover on driver side, the car received approx 4 1" scratches showing black, and a 6" light scratches that appears could be buffed out. Then entire area damaged is approx 1'x1'. would the hole bumper need painting or could this be touched up only in damaged area. (no dents)

Answer
Hi Todd!....As long as the scratches are just showing black, and are not damaged to the point of going totally through the bumper cover, this is just a cosmetic repair....If the damage was enough to penetrate through the cover, this would be a structural repair....This would warrant removal of the cover, and a procedure for repair which I can guide you through if it was needed...Fortunatly, from your description of the damage, a structural repair is not required....Structural repairs are done from the back....Although the damage seems to be cosmetic, the proper repair procedure, would be to remove the cover regardless, "V" groove the scratches, as so to achieve a proper featheredge, and repair the cosmetic damage with the proper flexible plastic fillers, sand, prime, and then paint...Re-installation of the cover, is the last step....Hope this helps you out....Drop me a line, if you have any further questions or concerns...I would be glad to help you out....Thanks....Dave
