Auto body repair & detailing: auto problems, auto problems, first five minutes

Question
have had issues with my car lately.  The last couple of weeks my car has been revving while in idle.    It does this right away as I drive for about the first five minutes, but after i use it for a while it acts normally.  it does this every day when I go to work or drive back from work after it has been in the parking lot for a while.  Now my battery light lights up in unison with the sounds of the car revving up when I am in idle, but as soon as I continue driving the light goes away.

Lastly, today, when at a stop light, my gauge (that shows me how much gas i am giving to my ca)r stopped working and went to 0, and all these warning lights went on including the emergency break light (which i checked and the emergency break was not being used).  However, my car continued to drive and I drove the rest of the way home.  When I got home, I turned off my car and looked at the lights and noticed they were very dim.  So, I tried to start my car up again to try to troubleshoot the problem, but it wouldn't start.  It would only make a clicking noise.

This makes me think that there is possibly a problem with either the gas pump, fuel injectors or something related to the fuel tank, and possibly the battery...but I just got a brand new battery  5-8 days ago and it didn't seem to negativity effect anything before.  ??

Answer
Hi Sarah!....This is a problem, that I cannot properly diagnose without seeing the vehicle...I would need to hook up a scan tool to it....Sorry....But I can offer you this....First of all, from your description, if you have already had the battery replaced, in my opinion, due to the fact that your lights are dim, and when you tried to re-start your vehicle, all you got was a clicking sound, it sounds like the alternator could possibly be the problem...Therefore not charging the battery properly...An AVR ( Alternator, Voltage Regulator ) test will confirm this....When a vehicle shuts down from lack of power, therefore stalling, generally, most of the dash light will come on...Pretty much the same as when you turn on the ignition switch to the " On " position, just before starting...As far as your vehicle revving while in idle, this could be a problem with the idle speed motor...( Depending on what type of vehicle you have )....Fuel and electrical problems often seem to overlap... They sometimes seem to have the same symtoms....I would suggest, that you take your vehicle to a mechanical repair shop that you trust, and have them check it out...Describe to them, exactly as you did to me. Also, just beware, that most shops, in a case like this will charge by the hour....No matter how long it takes to resolve your problem....Depending on how competent they are, or not, it could run into a substantial amount of money....I hope this is of some help...Thanks....Dave
