Auto body repair & detailing: Minor chip repairs, rock chips, chip problem

Question
Hi Michael,

I keep my vehicles for the long haul. Right now, I have a 2005 Camry. I am starting to notice a couple rock chips that appear to have chipped down to the steel and are developing a rust appearance. It has not yet seemed to have spead under tha paint - not bubbling up or anything severe. I plan to touch up these spots.

My question is: knowing that I plan to keep this car for a long time, and that mechanically, Toyotas often outlast their bodies, at what point should I consider taking it in for a professional paint repair? Am I just covering up the problem by dabbing paint over the top of these chips?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Toyota are known for the rock chip problem...you should be seeing them at the top part of the roof where the windshield meets.

The best thing that you can do is to touch up the nicks to prevent further spreading. Also purchase a front bud shield as this will deflect the air movement upwards at a greater rate and reduce the amount of rock chips.
