Auto body repair & detailing: How to replace a quarter panel, rear quarter panels, 73 nova

Question
Auto body repair & detailing: How to replace a quarter panel, rear quarter panels, 73 nova
Nova quarter panel
Mike,
I want to replace the rotted rear quarter panels in my '73 Nova, but I have never done anything like this. Is there some source (other than trade school) that can take me through the process of cutting out the old one and replacing it with an aftermarket panel? I'm concerned about getting the alignment right, and not cutting out too much of the original metal. As you can see in the photo, the rot extends around the periphery of the entire well, but the bulk of the panel itself is in really good shape. Once I get in there, a good portion of the wheelhouse should be rotted also. The opposite side quarter is the same. Thanks!

Answer
GARY....I WOULD NOT TRY TO DO THIS YOURSELF. IF YOU CUT INTO THE INNER QUARTER BY ACCIDENT,,,
THE TOOLS REQUIRED.... THE ALIGNMENT OF THE PANEL AFTER THE OLD ONE IS CUT OFF...TO MUCH CAN GO
WRONG.

ON THE OTHER HAND....YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER CUTTING THE RUST OUT AND SECTIONING A PIECE IN
INSTEAD OF A FULL QUARTER REPLACEMENT.

RUST WORK IS TRICKY IN THAT ONCE YOU START CUTTING YOU HAVE TO GO TO GOOD METAL...OFTEN YOU
FIND THAT THERE IS MORE THEN WHAT WAS ANTICIPATED.
