Auto body repair & detailing: Rear Wheel - Driver panel rusted away, bmw 318ti, auto body supply
318TI
Hi I have a 95 BMW 318ti with the read drivers side wheel well eaten away by rust.  The rust starts about 4 inces from the far end of the wheel well.  I am wondering what the best way to patch this, there is nothing for the metal grid patching to attach too so I would need to somehow make a frame for the wheel well.  I hope that makes sense. My autobody experience is very limited but I wanted to try and do this as its an old car and I dont want to put too much more money into it.  Thanks

Answer
It looks like you have enough metal to repair with fiber glass. Go to your auto body supply store and tell them what you are doing, they should be able to help you with the right materials. The right way would be to weld new panels on but you are trying to keep it cheap. Whatever way you choose to repair, make sure you treat the inside panel with something that will slow down the rust. I use a mixture of old motor oil and a paraffin based rust proofing. The old oil will soak into  the rust and the paraffin will help hold it there.
