Auto body repair & detailing: question about repairing a small ding on a brand new car... paint is chipping, brand new car, car paint

Question
QUESTION: Hi William,

I just picked up a brand new black Honda Accord.  I noticed that there is a small ding about 1/8 of an inch up from the bottom edge of the door.  The dealer applied some touch up paint to the chip prior to me picking up the car.  I was going to leave it alone but noticed that there is a vertical crack in the paint below the ding to the very edge.  The dealer says it will need to be painted and my question is can the body shop just paint that small section of the door and blend into the rest of the door?  Can the body shop match the texture of the paint?

ANSWER: Hey John. The door will need painted, spot jobs are for old beaters. The body shop will do a great job matching the color and texture. Bill

QUESTION: Will a spot job be noticible?  I am a little upset that a car with 200 miles on it will need to have the door painted.  I am concerned that the paint will not hold up.

Answer
John, the car will be fine. A spot job won't last or look good for as long as painting the door will. Spotting in a panel is doing it half assed, for lack of a nicer expression. A spot repair won't save much money, either. Your other option is to just leave it alone, and hope for the best. Bill
