Auto body repair & detailing: clearcoat, carnuba wax, rubbing compound

Question
The clearcoat on my boat has died. How can I get it back?

Answer
Most boats do not have a clearcoat. The boat industry uses gelcoat which can be up to 1/2 in. thick in some places. This allows for a smooth uniform surface that makes up the top coat that you see.A coarse rubbing compound with a buffer, not a polisher will restore some of the shine along with a lot of hand rubbing.Be sure to follow up with a good carnuba wax. This will prevent the finish from dulling in the future.
