Auto body repair & detailing: Rust not solid but there, grit sandpaper, pontiac grand prix

Question
Brian:  I have never asked you a single question.  I am not sure if you have me confused with someone else - but obviously you do.   I was asking a question since I am a single mother who just bought my daughter her first car - a 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix.  It's got areas in the paint that has spots that are not rusted thru, but you can see the metal and the rust is not solid, but there - I want to stop these spots from getting worse, as she would like to repaint the car eventually.  I was asking what do you suggest?

Answer
Sorry for the confusion on my part. I suggest that you sand off the rust to the bare metal using 80 grit sandpaper. then prime with a spray can primer. many light coats. Then paint with a close color from a spraycan. Sanding the primer a little first with 220 grit sandpaper. This will slow down the rusting process. But it is only temperary. Maybe 6 months to a year. These products can be bought at your local
Again sorry for my confusion.
               Hope this helps
