Auto body repair & detailing: Clear Coat, mercury mystique, paint brush

Question
Hi Mike and Lisa.

I have a 1996 Mercury Mystique.  The body shop at my local Ford Dealer repainted the entire car in back 1998 due to a paint cracking problem. My suspicion at the time is that the car was involved in an accident prior to me purchasing it. Regardless, Ford made good on it and repainted it.

Recently, I noticed a small area on the drivers side door where the clear coat is starting to get a little spotty as if it is beginning to delaminate from the base coat. I have seen this happen with another vehicle I owned so I recognized it right away.

It doesn't look to noticieable yet but I am afraid it is going to get worse. Is there a way I can prevent this? I do take excellent care of the car by keeping it waxed and clean. Is there something else I can do?

Any help or advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mike H.

Answer
Hello Mike,
There is not much you can do to prevent peeling.  The panel that is peeling may not have been done right at the body shop, they might not have cleaned that area properly with a chemical wipe down or there may have been dirt there.
What we would suggest now is to get yourself some high quality clear in an aerosol can, spray some in the lid and set it aside for a few minutes so it thickens.  Wipe the peeling area with alcohol.  With a small paint brush, like they use for arts and crafts, apply the clear to the area and about 1/4"around the outside, this will help seal it for now.
If it does get worse later, we would suggest taking it to a body shop and have it refinished.
Thank you,
Mike and Lisa
