QUESTION: Dear Ben:
My car is a 2001 crown Victoria policeman car. The driver side real window now gets difficult to down and up by itself. From the first 4 inches of the top end of the window, it moved smooth then the speed of the window become slow, finally, the window down to the bottom position, during the back up process, the window speed is very slow, when it hit the last four inches position to the top end, the window recovered to full speed.
I tested the voltage on the motor; it got 7 voltages like other three window's motor. Without the motor moving, the voltage before the switch was 12 or 14.3 v. depending the motor is running or not.

I thought the driver real motor is getting dirty. Put some lube silicon on the track of the window, the speed of the window got some improvement.
Please let me know that should I replace the motor or not?
If yes, can I just take out the motor without cutting the rivets?
I read your article about year 1999 Crown Victoria’s window motor replacement; it gave me a lot of idea. But some one said that the Crown vic year 1999 and 2002 is some different with year 2001
I have a manual for year 2002, the book said I must to cut the rivets before moving the motor by take out the three mounting screws.

Any suggestion from you will be much appreciated

Thanks

Shawn

Answer
Hello Shawn,

It is difficult to say exactly what is wrong with your rear window without being able to hear and see it run.  You could have a weak motor, the gear "cushions" inside the head of the motor could be broken or the cable window regulator could be failing.

The window regulators and window motors for the Crown Victoria are the same for the years 1992 through 2010.  Depending on the year, there are only some minor differences in how the regulator is mounted to the door.  The window regulator/motor repair procedures in your 2002 shop manual should be fine for your 2001 model if you decide to attempt the repair yourself.

An expert can remove the motor from the regulator without taking the regulator out of the door, but I can't recommend that someone without extensive experience attempt it.  You would probably find it very difficult to do and you could end up ruining the window regulator in the process.

In general, working on the window regulator/motor system in a Crown Victoria is best left to a professional unless you have a high level of mechanical skill and the proper tools and repair procedure information.
