Mazda: Mazda6, mazda products, reliability record

Question
I am considering purchasing the new Mazda6 S with the 3.0L V6 engine.   I have been told that this is a Ford-built engine that has had some reliability issues in the past.  I am looking for an honest assessment of this engine.  I see that you work for Mazda, so I am hoping that you will give me an unbiased answer.    I purchased a 1985 626 new, and sold it in 1997 with $193k miles on it. I then bought a 97 626, which I am currently driving, with $156k miles on it.  I love's Mazda's reliability, which is why I want to remain with Mazda, but I am concerned about the rumors I have heard about the V6 engine. My prior cars were both 4 cyl engines. Please advise. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Dennis.  To set the record straight I do not now, nor have I ever, worked for Mazda.  I was general manager of one of the largest Mazda dealers in America and am a supporter of Mazda products because I personally like them, not because I am paid to.  I have not heard of any problems with the 6cyl engine used in the Mazda6.  All makes have problems from time to time but Mazda has a much better reliability record, along with Toyota and Honda, than most of the others in this class.  If you go to edmunds.com and check on the Mazda 6 they will have comments from owners, both happy and those not so happy and you can determine for yourself.  In any case I wish you the best of luck.  Bud
