Auto Glass: 1999 F150 Passenger Window Vibration, window slides, size shape

Question
QUESTION: Ben,
I had to start a new question because of too many follow up questions. Regarding the "stuttering" window...I am so sorry....I did not replace the regulator...just the motor. I was confused on exactly what the regulator was. I was thinking the motor was attached to the regulator. I assume I probably need a regulator?

ANSWER: Hi Rob,

The regulator does not usually fail so don't go to all that work and expense until we eliminate some other possible problems.

First, remove the three bolts that hold the motor onto the regulator and remove the motor rom inside the door.  Next, slide the glass up and down by hand to check that the glass is moving smoothly and not making any unusual noise as it goes up or down.  Assuming everything is okay, go to the next step.

Look at your motor and count the teeth on the gear of the motor.  There should be nine.  Compare your new motor to the old one to be sure the teeth are the same size & shape as the old one.  Again, assuming that both motors look the same, go to the next step.

Position the glass so that it is about three inches from the top of the door.  Secure the glass with a piece of tape or a wedge.  (This next part might be easier if you have someone to help you.) Next place the motor in position behind the regulator and install all three mounting screws, but do not tighten the screws.  Leave the screws loose enough so that you can move the motor about 1/4 of an inch behind the regulator.  Now position the motor on the regulator and attempt to move the glass down.  If the gear on the motor is properly "meshed" with the teeth of the regulator, the glass won't move as long as you are holding the motor securely to the regulator.  Now you can tighten the screws and everything should work properly.

Let me know how things turn out.

QUESTION: Ben,
I removed the motor and the window slides up and down easily. I held the motor against regulator and window would not move...then attached motor with screws. Still stuttering!  I know I told you this before...but there is a lot of vibration around the motor and regulator but I can't tell why. Also...it now seems the top mounting screw is stripped and will not tighten completely...but it was vibrating/stuttering before the screw became stripped.

ANSWER: Rob,

I can think of only three things that explain your situation.

1.  You have installed the wrong motor.

2.  You have installed the motor in such a way that it does not properly mesh with the regulator.

3.  You purchased a re-manufactured motor and the re-builder did not replace the gear cushions inside the motor head and the motor gear slips when under load.

QUESTION: Ben,
I finally got the right motor...I think. I installed new motor and the window goes up smoothly and down smoothly until it gets all the way down and then it will not go back up. No clicking...no motor noise when I push the up switch. I could not even help it by pulling up on window.  I removed motor and tested and it works fine. Reinstalled motor and same thing...goes all the way down but will not go back up. This only happens when it goes all the way down...it goes back up when I only lower to about 2" above door.

Answer
Hi Rob,

From your description of the situation it seems that the electrical portion of the system is okay and you finally have the correct motor installed so we can eliminate those two issues.

The only thing I can think of is that the motor doesn't have enough torque to overcome the load when the window is all the way down.  Is the motor you installed used or re-manufactured or new?
