Auto Glass: 95 Honda Civic driver door, honda civic hatchback, silicone product

Question
I have a 95 Honda civic hatchback and I've had to replace the glass on the driver side multi times now. I've also replaced the regulator. Everytime I roll the window down it gets jammed and if u keep trying it will go down but then up it sticks and wants to break. Help please!!

Answer
Hi Michelle,

I have never seen this type of problem on any Honda Civic although my experience has most often been with the Civic Coupe rather than the Hatchback.

Before you do anything else, lubricate the run channel gaskets. (The front and back edges of the glass slide up and down in these gaskets.) Use the least expensive spray silicone product you can find at your local hardware or home store.  DON'T USE ANY OTHER TYPE OF LUBRICATION.

If the silicone lubrication does not solve the problem, then there could be some damage to the run channels or run channel gaskets that support the glass as it is lowered inside the door.  You can investigate this possibility as follows:

1.  Remove the door panel and the plastic moisture/dust barrier.

2.  Remove the glass from the regulator and slide the glass up all the way and secure it with a wedge or piece of tape.

3.  Lower the window regulator all the way down.

4.  Slowly lower the glass by hand a few inches at a time to see if there is some point at which the glass does not move smoothly.  If it binds as it goes down, inspect both the front and rear channels to be sure the run channel gasket and metal support channel are in good condition.  If you can lower the glass all the way to the bottom and then raise it back up with no binding or sticking, then I doubt that your problem is being caused by the run channels or run channel gaskets.

If this doesn't lead you to the problem, please send me a follow up question and tell me more about where you bought the regulator, who installed it, etc.
