Auto Glass: Power Windows 2003 Mustang, electrical meter, side switch

Question
QUESTION: Hello, You had a question about power windows for this car. I have the same problem which when I hit up/down switch for windows it clicks, Replaced power motor and still have same problem. Window go up/down with no resistance. Any help? Thanks Joe

ANSWER: Hello Joe,

I am not sure I understand your question.  So, let me ask you some questions.

1.  Did the window "go up/down with no resistance" before you replaced the motor?

2.  Do you have a 12V test light or electrical meter to use to test the switch & wiring?

3.  Did you check to see if the new motor worked before you installed it on the regulator?

Please get back to me with this information and I should be able to help.

QUESTION: Sorry, I checked the new motor before I installed it which the gear was spinning before I install. When installed That when I hear the clicking noise, The up/down was when the motor was taken out because I had to put window up so I can install new motor. I tested the switch by using the passengers side switch which works, and have not tested any wires. Thanks for your time Joe

ANSWER: Hi Again Joe,

To be sure I understand your problem, let me tell you what I think you have done.

1.  You removed the old motor.

2.  You connected the new motor to the wiring and pressed the switch "up" and the motor turned, then you pressed the switch "down" and the motor turned the opposite direction.

3.  You installed the new motor on the window regulator and you pressed the switch up and down but nothing happened.

Let me know if I have this correct and add anything else you think is important.

Sorry to make you write again, but I can't give you good advice unless I am sure of the situation.

QUESTION: Yes that is correct, When motor is installed that when it makes clicking noise. I thank you for helping me with my problem. Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,

Based on what you are telling me, I can only think of three situations that would explain why the motor runs when it is not installed, but won't run when it is installed.

1.  The motor is faulty.  Try this.  Remove the motor, connect it to the car wiring, place a pair of locking pliers on the motor drive gear, and then quickly press and release the switch button.  It should be almost impossible to keep the gear from turning by holding on to the locking pliers.  If you can keep the motor from turning, you have a bad motor.

2.  If you try step #1 and you find that the motor is not faulty, then there could be a problem with the wiring.  It is possible that the wiring makes a good connection when the motor is not installed but for some reason the connection is lost after the motor is in place.  This would be very unusual and hard to find.

3.  Make sure that the gear on the old motor and the gear on the new motor are the same.  If the gear on the new motor is different than the old one, the motor could be jammed against the window regulator in such a way that the motor won't turn.  This would also be very unusual, but I can't think of anything else that could explain your problem.

Let me know if I can help in any other way.
