Auto Glass: 2001 Kia Optima rear window, 2001 kia optima, window mechanisms

Question
QUESTION: Hi Ben, I've read the past postings and I think you can help me with my problem. I have a KIA Optima 2001 4dr. The rear passenger side window does not work at all. Luckily it is positioned all the way up (little bit of space)but almost closed position. All windows are working well, just that side. I bought the car from a friend and there's a dent on that side of the door but not exactly on the window section, just below almost to the very tip of the door close to the step. I'm not sure if that damage caused the window not rolling up.

I really appreciate your inputs on this! Thank you in advance!

Regards,
Paul

ANSWER: Hello Paul,

I doubt that the dent in the door has anything to do with the problem.

The most likely cause is a broken cable style window regulator.  If you go to http://www.dormanproducts.com and type "749-401" in the box identified as "enter part number or key word" you will see a photo of the mechanism in question.  You can click on the illustration to get a larger picture.  Most major parts stores will be able to get this part for you at an affordable price.

The replacement process is not too difficult as power window mechanisms go, but that assumes a reasonable amount of mechanical skill and the availability of the proper tools.  You don't mention how much experience you have in this area so if you need some additional information feel free to send a follow up question.

QUESTION: Thank you for the very quick response!

I checked the website and found the item you are referring to as the window regulator. To tell you honestly, I have no background with auto electricals. With that being said, are there any simple do-it-yourself instructions to fix it? OR this is the time to actually go to a shop and have the experts do it? Again, thanks for your help! :)

Answer
Hi Paul,

The process is a little too complicated to explain in an email.  However, if you will go back to the Dorman web site at

     http://www.dormanproducts.com/getmore/videos.html

you will find a video showing how to install a cable style regulator.  There are some minor differences between the car in the video and your Kia, but it should give you what you need to know to do the job.

If you decide not to tackle it yourself, do not go to the dealer.  Any decent mechanic or glass shop should be able to make this repair in 45 minutes.

Good luck with your project.
