Auto Glass: Window-regulator, power window regulator, silicone spray

Question
QUESTION: I-am-replacing-window-in-98-grand-prix-and-when-i-roll-the-window-up-it-comes-out-of-track-what-can-i-do-to-fix-it

ANSWER: Hi Stephanie,

I need more information to give you a complete answer but let me offer a couple of suggestions that will apply to whatever situation you have.

1.  The rubber gasket that the front and back edges of the glass slide in as it moves up and down is called the run channel.  You should inspect this channel to be sure there are no torn edges, no spots that are restricted or pinched closed, and no pieces of broken glass lodged inside.

2.  If the the run channel does not have any of the problems listed in step one, lubricate the entire run channel with spray silicone.  Do not use any  lubricant but silicone!  Spray silicone is available at most Home Depots, Lowes, etc.  Cheap ($3.00 - $4.00) silicone spray works as well as expensive ($8.00 - $9.00) silicone spray so don't over pay.

If steps 1 and 2 do not resolve your problem, please get back to me with the following info.

A.  Which window?

B.  Manual or power window regulator?.

C.  Reason for replacing the glass.

D.  Is the replacement glass salvaged GM glass or new non-GM glass?

E.  Does the glass slip out of the channel going down?  ... how far down is it when is the glass jumps out?

F.  Does the glass slip out of the channel going up?  ...   how far up is it when the glass jumps out?

QUESTION: It is both front windows they are power windows.  The window was takin out because to take off the messed up tint job.  So it is the original window regular gm glass.  It when the window starts to go up thats when it leans down a little and slips out.  It jumps out about a inch going up. Going down i just hold it in and it goes down.

Answer
Hello Again Stephanie,

I think you will find that the silicone spray that I recommended earlier will do the trick.   Don't bother taking off the door panel.  Just roll the glass down all the way and spray the silicone in the front and back run channels.  Use a good deal of silicone so that it will run down the channel below the top of the door panel.  Then role the window up and down a couple of times to see if that does the trick.

If the problem persists, send me another follow up and I'll give you some other possible problems to look for.

One last thing.  If you didn't know how to get the door panel off, how did you remove the glass to clean off the old tint film?
