Auto Glass: 94 lincoln town car window motor keeps running at full stop, lincoln town car, gear rollers

Question
QUESTION: i have a 94 lincoln town car that the windown motor would run but not move the window. i took out the window regulator and the lift motor and found that the rollers in the lift motor was completely torn apart. i cleaned all of the old rollers out of the gear and replaced the rollers in the lift motor. the regulator cable came out of its holder and unwind and i rewinded the cable back into the holder and reattached the motor to the regulator. after putting the assembly back into the car, the window rolls up and down fine expect when pushing the window switch to full up or full down the motor keeps trying to run the window. when switch is released, the motor stops but will window switch is used in the automatic down, the motor keeps running at full down until the switch is touched to up position and then the motor quits. Question did i install the gear and rollers wrong or is regulator at fault because the cable holder came out and i put it back together wrong or the cable tension is wrong.

ANSWER: Hello Danny,

This is a bit confusing.  It is really hard to imagine what could be causing the motor to continue to run once the window has reached the top or bottom of its run.

I don't think it could be the regulator.  If you had done anything wrong when re-winding the cables back onto the spool, I doubt that the regulator would work properly.

So that leaves us with the motor as the source of the problem.  Let me ask you a couple of questions.

1.  Did you purchase a new gear and the three new gear rollers?

2.  If you didn't purchase a new gear and rollers how did you repair the old one?

Get back to me with your answers and I will be happy to think a bit more about what could be causing the problem.

QUESTION: i didn't replace the gear, only the rollers which is carried by auto parts store. i took the one screw off of the motor top and removed the metal top and then you can see the gear and where the rollers are. the old rollers where in pieces inside the gear and on top of the gear. i pulled all of the pieces out of the motor housing and i pulled the plastic gear out to get one of the pieces of plastic out from behind the gear and wall of the housing. then i put the gear back in the housing and placed the new rollers in the center of the plastic gear and under the center metal gear.

Answer
Hello Danny,

It sounds like you did the job just the way I would.

I can only think of two situations where a properly rebuilt gear failed after I did the repair.

1.  The gear inserts were made out of the wrong plastic and they broken into small pieces just a few days after they were installed.

2.  I am sure you will remember that the gear assembly slides over a short metal shaft that is pressed into the case of the motor housing.  If the shaft breaks away from the housing there is just enough play that the gear assembly will move inside the motor head.

Sorry I can't give you a definite answer.  This is just too unusual a problem to know for sure what is going on.

Good Luck, Ben ... the power window guy
