Auto Glass: 02 Taurus window stuck down, rare occasions, typical symptoms

Question
Hi,

My drivers side window in my 02 Taurus is stuck about half way open. It will roll down further but when the up button is pushed there is clicking coming from under the dash and it will not budge. Any idea what the problem may be? It's been acting up for a while now, some days it will stop rolling down, but when I roll it back up a bit then roll down more it works.

Thanks!
Jenny

Answer
Hi Jenny,

This vintage of Taurus commonly has three different and unrelated window problems: a bad motor, a bad switch, and a bad window regulator.  I'll explain the typical symptoms for each situation.

ONE:  BAD MOTOR
Usually the window goes down normally, but won't come back up.  This only occurs when the glass is all the way down.

TWO:  BAD SWITCH
The window goes down normally, but won't go up at all or will only go up if you press the button on the switch exactly the right way.  This is true no matter how little or how far down the window has moved.  Eventually the window won't go up at all no matter how you press the button.

THREE:  BAD REGULATOR
The switch and motor work properly, but the glass is crooked and is binding in the run channels.

You definitely don't have a bad regulator, but the symptoms your Taurus is exhibiting don't exactly match what I typically see, so I can't say for sure what may be wrong.

One last thing: on rare occasions this vintage of Taurus will have a window problem due to the failure of the "electronic control module".

I am sorry to say that you will definitely need to have someone with experience deal with this issue for you.
