Auto Glass: 2001 Suburban Power Window Problem, hex screws, auto parts stores

Question
I have a 2001 Suburban.   The passenger side front window only will not roll up nor down.  I replaced the switch assembly but the window still does not function.  I suspect it is the motor as when I press the window switch the lights dim somewhat.   Before I tackle removing the door panel, is this a difficult job and can you provide instructions or other guidance on what the problem could be?

Hello Miranda,

It is very possible that the window motor has failed, but there is no sure way to know unless you test to make sure that power from the switch is reaching the motor.

If you determine that the motor is bad, I recommend replacing both the window regulator and the motor.  It is typically sold as an assembly by both GM and in the after-market.  If you decide to use an after-market regulator assembly I advise that you use one made by Dorman.  Many auto parts stores will handle that brand.  It is part number 741-644.

Removing the door panel is fairly simple compared to many other door panels.  Below is a rough outline of the steps needed.

1.  Remove the switch bezel by prying up on the front edge first and work your way toward the back.  Once the switch is loose.  Remove the wires from the switch.

2.  Remove the door lock indicator by prying out the front edge first.

3.  Remove the door handle bezel by prying out the back edge first.

4.  Remove the mirror access cover by prying from the top first and working your way down.

5.  Remove two (2) 7mm hex screws: one is under the handle; the other is under the switch.

6.  Lift the panel straight up to disengage the "claws" the slide into the corresponding slots on the inside of the door.  Before you pull the panel away you must reach behind the panel and disconnect the tweeter speaker wire and the power seat wire if so equipped.

7.  To access the regulator mechanism you need to take the door release handle off by removing the 10mm bolt, the connecting rod, and then sliding the handle forward to disengage the "claws."

8.  Now you can carefully remove the plastic moisture/dust barrier.  Save for re-use.  It's best to use some spray contact cement to re-install it.
