Auto Parts: 2005 Buick Rendezvous Wipers, cruise control module, buick rendezvous

Question
This morning the wipers just stopped working. I checked the fuse and it is good. When I turn the switch to intermittent I get a momentary low hum. When I turn it to full on the hum is constant but the wiper arms wont move. I can move the wiper arms freely by hand. Is there some sort of belt connecting the arms that may have broken?
Thanks

Hello Jim,

I see this problem quite often in my shop.  The problem you are experiencing is that the wind shield wiper motor has gone bad, and needs to be replaced.

To replace this in your vehicle, will be a bit more involved than in other vehicles, because Buick rendezvous do not have independent wiper motors, the wiper motor is part of the wiper system drive module assembly, therefore the wiper motor module must be replaced to fix this issue.  To do this follow the below steps and reference the attached photo:

First Remove the wiper arms, to do this;
1. Turn the ignition switch to the accessory position.
2. Turn the wiper switch to the delay position.
3. Turn the ignition OFF when the wiper arms are in the innerwipe position and not moving.
4. Disconnect the washer hose from the washer nozzle.
5. Remove the cover from the wiper arm nut.
6. Remove the wiper arm nut from the wiper transmission drive shaft.
7. Using J 39822 (wiper arm puller), remove the wiper arm from the wiper transmission drive shaft.
8. Clean the knurls of the wiper transmission drive shaft with a wire brush.

Second remove the wiper motor module, to do this;
1. Remove the air inlet grille panel.
2. Remove the under hood electrical center
3. Remove the cruise control module.
4. Disconnect the wiper motor cover electrical connector
5. Remove the wiper system drive module bolts.
6. Remove the wiper system drive module from the engine compartment.

Third install the new wiper motor module, to do this;
1. Position the wiper system drive module to the Cowl.
2. Install wiper system drive module bolts.  Tighten the bolts to 9 N.m (80 LB IN).
3. Connect the wiper motor cover electrical connector.
4. Install the cruise control module and bracket.
5. Install the under hood electrical center.
6. Install the air inlet grille panel.
7. Install the wiper arm onto the wiper transmission driveshaft.
8. Measure the distance from the wiper blade tip to the solid edge of the windshield blackout.  Position the wiper arms at the following distances:
L H – 40 MM (1.57 in)above the glass blackout.
R H – 160 MM (6.30 in) below the glass blackout.
IMPORTANT: Hold the measuring device at 90° (perpendicular)to the wiper blade tip.
9. Install the wiper arm nut onto the wiper transmission driveshaft.
Tighten the nut to 48 N.m (35 Lb Ft)
10. Install the cover of a wiper arm nut.
11. Install washer hose to the washer nozzle.
IMPORTANT: Lubricate the washer hose with the windshield washer fluid to ensure ease of installation.
12. Inspect the wipers for proper operation.
