Auto Parts: Oil pan gasket, pan gasket, jeep wrangler

Question
I have a 1987 jeep wrangler, I had the oil pan gasket changed ,they used the blue gasket.  Then I noticed it was leaking so I took off the pan ,and the gasket was cut on the rear of the gasket wear it goes up near the rear on the pan.  This would be wear the dip is in the back of the pan like a half moon.   So I put a new one on just like it and it starting leaking again, I took it off and it is cut in the same place cut in half like the first one.  What is the problem am I over tighting it.

Answer
You probably are over-tightening it.  If it is a Fel-Pro brand gasket it should have the installation specs printed on the box or on a slip of paper in the box.  It is also possible that the pan has become bent or warped.  You can check this by placing it on a very flat surface (like a piece of glass) and looking for any gaps between the pan rail and the surface.  If there are any, you can probably fix them by tapping lightly with a small hammer against a wood block.  Don't use any gasket sealants unless the box or instructions call for them specifically.
