Auto Parts: Anti Lock Brake light, oil change reminder, independent repair shops

Question
My Anti Lock Brake Light comes on intermittenly.  Not often.  The few times I have taken it too service shop I was told they couldn't find why it came on.  It usually doesn't stay on but when it is on I do notice the brakes don't work as quickly as they should.  Also service engine light comes on constantly..sometimes an oil change will make it go off.  i've had 2 O2 sensors replace twice last year.  The last time I took it to service shop about a month ago they said they couldn't find out why it was on so they reset it but the next day it came on AGAIN!!  Very frustrating.

Answer
I don't know who you've got working on your car, but you need to find someone else.  Both the ABS computer and the ECM store trouble codes.  That means that a competent mechanic can pull those codes and go about repairing the fault.  More importantly, a genuinely competent mechanic will have a real-time scanner which will enable him to use the computer to look at the sensors and components involved and determine which ones are defective.  When they change the oil at a shop they reset the computer's oil-change reminder.  If this is why the light was on, then it would go off.  Just resetting the light doesn't do anything, the fault must be repaired.  If you really can't get satisfaction from any of your local independent repair shops then take the car to the dealer.  Make sure he knows what is going on and the problems you've had with the other shops.  You need to get all of this cleared up, especially the ABS issues as they may affect the safety of the car.
