Auto Parts: trans. for mercruiser 4cyl., t buckets, ford components

Question
I have a 140 mercruiser 4cyl. 70s era that i want to use in a small streetrod
roadster, my question is what transmissions can i use since this is basically a
chevy motor? Will a s-10 or camaro 5 speed fit, if so what parts do I need for
the install?
thank you ,
Lee

Answer
The four cylinder Mercruiser, with the exception of the 470 aluminum-block 3.7L I/O unit (uses Ford components), is the same four cylinder engine used in the Nova.  It will bolt up to anything that a small-block V8 will bolt to, which made it very convenient for Mercruiser to use.  They are perfect for T-buckets and so forth as they produce good bottom-end torque and, with the marine camshaft, decent power in the upper range.  They won't rev real high so, if you're thinking about any kind of racing, you might want to consider replacing the camshaft and the rest of the valvetrain with something more aggressive.  But, if it's just for cruising, I wouldn't change anything.  When the time comes to rebuild this engine you might want to replace the crank with one from a 3.0L, 180HP Mercruiser.  It has a longer stroke and will give you more torque, I've seen these used in a number of lightweight hot-rods.
