Auto Parts: button on keychain for car to turn over and start with key, 2002 pontiac sunfire, pontiac sunfire

Question
I have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire. in order to start my car i have to do the following: get in, shut the door, put the key in the ignition, push a button on a keychain with two buttons that do the same thing, after that, when i turn the key, my car starts. if i dont push this button nothing happens (note this is not a keychain that unlocks the doors. my windows have hand cranks and my locks are manual as well)....... i need to know what this da** keychain/button is please!! apparently the battery in it is dead and i have no way of getting a new one if i dont know what it is or what it does, therefore i cant start my car!

Answer
Hi Casey,

It is probably an alarm or disabler that was installed by a previous owner. If you can't find new batteries for the fob, maybe you should consider removing the aftermarket unit and bringing your car back to the condition it was prior to being tampered with.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
