Auto Parts: 92 BMW 325i, mass air flow sensor, air flow sensor

Question
QUESTION: In replacing a failed alternator I had to remove the air filter box, and partially disconnect the Mass Air Flow sensor so I could get at it.  After putting it all back together the care doesn't run right and I am wondering if I could have damaged the Air Flow Sensor, as I have heard they are fragile.  The car will start, it's now charging, but doesn't want to go down the road without quiting.  How does one go about checking the Air Flow sensor to determine if it as failed?  Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks,
Steve

ANSWER: Did you install the MAF sensor properly?  There should be an arrow on it, pointing which direction airflow should be going (into the motor).  Are all your connections re-attached properly, with no air leaks past the MAF sensor?

QUESTION: Yes, There was only one way to put it on.  I left the bent tubing that went to the intake attached, but disconnected the end at the intake, and just layed it over out of the way.  I'm not stranger to auto repairs, just not smart on the electronics.  Is there a way to test the sensor to verify it's working properly?

Answer
Yes, there's a way to test the sensor.  You should have a certain voltage at the sensor with the key on, etc.  A maintenance manual should help.  Also, the "Auto Repair" section of this site may provide you with a better answer; I don't have that repair manual handy at this time unfortunately.
