Auto Parts: Wire colors on IAT sensor for 1999 Pontiac sunifre, engine sensors, wire colors

Question
Hello,
I was wondering if you could tell me which wire (of the two) from the IAT sensor is the positive signal wire.  I am referring to the IAT sensor on a 1999 Pontiac Sunifre 2.2L.
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Darren,

The CCEC system in your vehicle uses multi-frequency receiving to read the sensors. Both wires should be signal carriers. Unlike cars of yesteryear, engine sensors used on todays vehicle use mV scales and testing should only be done with the proper equipment to prevent additional damage to the system. The IAT uses no ground and just floats using the signal wires as a virtual ground on the CCEC bus.

If you are having issues with a single sensor, first I'd have to ask how you came to that conclusion and second I'd have to wonder what supplying 12V to a .3mV sensor is going to accomplish other than guaranteeing you'll be replacing it. If you do not posses the proper equipment for diagnosis of this system, you'll be best served by taking it to someone who does and save yourself the time and hassle.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
