Auto Parts: 1997 GMC Yukon Door Drivers Front Door Handle Replacement, gmc yukon, pep boys

Question
I have a 1997 GMC Yukon 5.7L V8, the drivers side (front) door handle has cracked.  I've ordered a replacement, what is the simplest way to replace the part.  I have pretty good mechanical sense, but have never done this.  Could you walk me through it as best you can.  Again, I will be replacing the Driver side, front, door handle.

Thank you

Answer
Hi Robert,

You didn't mention inside or outside?

Either way, you need to remove the door panel to gain access. Once off, if it is an inside handle, it'll probably only be held in position with two screws and take care when disconnecting the actuator rod. Pay attention to the way the nylon lock fits the rod or you'll be screwing with it for an hour.

Outside handles are just as easy but you need to go further to get at them. If it is an outside handle, raise the window up all the way and remove the two or three tin-set nuts. I HATE tin-set nuts but a 10mm should make short work of them and the real fun comes when putting them back on. they are very easy to strip. Again, pay attention to the way the nylon lock attaches the actuator rod for reassembly and also keep a note to which rod connects to which component because you'll probably have a lock-cylinder there too to worry about.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
