Auto Parts: standing water in floorboard, eclipse gs, pep boys

Question
QUESTION: i just bought a 2001 eclipse gs and have had only 3 wks. and the passenger side floorboard was damp. had the hoses flushed by the dealer and came home left for 5 days and come home to 2 inches of standing water in passenger floorboard, what could this be?

ANSWER: Hi Alicia,

The lower seal on your windshield is leaking or it is the blend-box seal. These are both VERY typical issues for that model and your dealership certainly should have known that. If you have that much water in there, then I'd have to say it is the blend-box seal as the windshield seal only leaks with the vehicle moving.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.

QUESTION: can you please tell me what or where the blend-box seal is?  could find nothing anywhere on it.

Answer
Hi Alicia,

I don't mean to sound patronizing here but that is not a task you will be able to take care of yourself. The entire blend box must be removed from the vehicle and resealed. There are about a dozen seals and connections that need to be siliconed. Unless I am mistaken and you own your own shop, you will have no ability to perform the needed repair. I'm sorry.

The blend box, core box, climate control housing or whatever you want to refer to it as, it is located on the passenger-side firewall and extends into the passenger compartment. You'll need to remove everything short of the engine and transmission in order to gain access and as such, the entire dash assembly must also be removed for access. Coolant and freon will need to be drained/vacuumed and refilled once the task is complete. I'd have to say if you take it to a decent shop that will take care of the issue timely, you're still looking at 12-20 hours JUST in labor. At an average of $78.00 per hour for shop labor, wow.

I wish I had better news for you but I don't.

Check with a lawyer in your area and see if you can have the vehicle considered a 'lemon'. I'd have to say that the needed repairs have to come close to the 1/3 of the vehicle's value which is that standard criteria for the lemon-law.
