Auto Parts: ecu for nissan maxima, power drivers seat, nissan maxima

Question
QUESTION: i drive a manual transmission 98 nissan maxima, the ecu was replaced a few years ago by an ecu that came from a maxima with auto transmission. i cannot pass the smog test in california, i have been told to put the right ecu in my car.i have been trying to get a used ecu but unfortunately they keep asking me to give them the number that is on the ecu unit itself. is there a reference manual that would give me the ecu number for the manual tran maxima, my car was made in dec/97. the dealer sells them for about a grand whereas a used one runs for 250$. i hope you can help, so far nobody has been able to do anything, and spending a grand for a car that old is not a very attractive idea, thanks for your feedback  BEN

ANSWER: Hi Ben,

I may be able to assist you but I'm going to need additional information from you.

I'll assume since MT/AT is an option that your vehicle is either a GXE or an SE. If a GXE, I need to know vehicle is California or Federally emissioned and whether you have a power drivers seat. If it is an SE I only need to know Federal or California emissions.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
