Auto Parts: Fuel Level Sensor, fuel level sensor, pep boys

Question
I have a 1998 GMC K1500 ext.cab Z71, 5.7L, Auto trans. My gauge is going crazy, and I read what you had told someone to do, and tried this. My question is, on this particular vehicle, can I buy the Fuel Level sensor separate from the fuel pump?

Answer
Hi David,

You can replace JUST the pump or JUST the sending unit on those assemblies but it would be a back-yard procedure. What I mean is that according to the notes GM and Hollander released on these assemblies, the whole thing 'should' be replaced as a single unit. I've replaced senders and pumps on those assemblies before but it is a tricky operation and if not done correctly will or could result in no operation of the assembly.

Chances are you won't have access to just a sender for that unless you still have the one you replaced to use for donor parts so you'll probably end up purchasing the whole unit.

Oh yeah, steer clear of aftermarket assemblies if possible as they are cheaply made and the senders are 'jittery'.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
