Auto Parts: 96 Ford Ranger fuel gauge, fuel gauge, donor vehicle

Question
I am looking at a 1996 Ford Ranger XL pickup, and the only thing wrong with it is that the fuel gauge doesn't work. I was wondering how much it usually costs to have it repaired and also wondering if there are varieties to this problem, or if it could be traced back to one thing. I'd appreciate a reply even though I know you're very busy. Thanks

Answer
Hi Nathan,

The instrument cluster in your vehicle is not directly interchangeable with other, like items from other vehicles unfortunately. You CAN interchange them but they are very specific items which is why there is currently no notes on them. You would have to make sure EVERYTHING on the donor vehicle is identical to yours with special interest paid to the service number listed on your unit to match it exactly with the donor.

If you find a cluster and only want to replace the fuel gage, you'll probably have less problems as they most likely didn't make that many different variations of the individual gages.

For fuel gage no-work issues, I've found allot of times the problem is the tank sender unit. Test both units before wasting your time and money replacing items that do not need to be.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
