Auto Parts: MB 2004 S430 Trunk Lid, 1998 bmw 740il, bmw 740il

Question
I recently purchased a 2004 Mercedes S430.  It does not have an electronic "push button" trunk lid.  I can, of course, open it from the door or the key fob.  I had a 1998 BMW 740iL which had a similar trunk--however, it opened and closed with ease.  The Mercedes has extra strong springs and pops open abruptly and is harder to close.  Is there a way I can change the springs and replace them with pneumatic struts?  I know this is relatively unimportant, but it bugs me.

Answer
Hi Mark,

Sorry for the late reply, sometimes I get busy and forget.

those torque rods are adjustable. There should either be a multi-position cam on one end and you'd just need to move to 90 degree end into one of the other, less torqued positions or I have seen that set-up use a locknut and allthread to accomplish the same function but to adjust them you'd only need to loosen the locknut and place the rod into the position you want it in.

Keep in mind that those torque rods will loose tension over time and setting the torque too low will hinder trunk opening performance.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
