Auto Parts: heater/ac blower, gmc jimmy blazer, air thermostat

Question
QUESTION: 91 GMC Jimmy/blazer v-6. Blower not operating but tapping on the capacitor--or resistor (small silver box) under hood starts the blower again. Is this replaced all that is needed?...a dealer item only?

ANSWER: Hi Bill,

You don't need my help, you already answered both of the questions you asked.

There is probably just a corroded contact in the relay. If you're feeling froggy, leap right in and see if you can clean it up by taking it apart. You'll be replacing it anyway so if you bust it up beyond repair, the dealership has more. You could probably find one in a local auto recycling facility near you also.

QUESTION: also..will a defective resistor coil inside heater box result in no warm air? Thermostat is ok and heater core is not stopped up. (A new relay fixed the blower) Tks Again!

ANSWER: Hi Bill,

That coil inside the blend box is used mainly in A/C systems as an activation switch but they dual-purpose to a thermal cut-off. If the relay receives more than around 12 amps, the coil will pop off. It's actual function is as a pseudo air-temperature sensor using resistance. Once the coil pops off, it is bad and needs to be replaced. That though, is a very, very rare occurance.

QUESTION: Replaced the 5 prong relay and blower works fine now on high speed..but lower speeds it cuts on...and off every few minutes. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Bill,

The relay is overheating possibly due to the wrong resistance resistor being installed? Or the blend-box is not venting properly due to a blockage somewhere around the coil? Possible that you replaced a defective coil with another defective coil?

On high, full power is routed through the resistor block to the fan. When you drop the setting down, the same amount of energy is still entering the resistor but instead of full voltage being sent out the other end, it is stepped-down. When you step-down voltage, the resistor heats up as a byproduct of the resistor trapping the excess voltage. The lower the fan setting, the hotter the resistor assembly will get. If it gets too hot, to protect itself and the fan, it will shut off temporarily. This exact same style relay is used on your turn signal and hazard flasher only the resistance value is set real low to insure that the unit overheats and clicks off. A second after power is cut, the coil cools and turns the power back on until it overheats again completing the cycle in about 2 seconds. Your fan resistor/relay/coil sounds defective or the resistance value is incorrect for the application.
