Auto Parts: 1992 firebird wiper switch, center shaft, clock spring

Question
How do you remove the clock spring, my switch is the one with the harness. I have the air bag and wheel removed. and the source for the airbag. But cannot figure out the clock spring. Thanks for any help that you can give.

Answer
Hi Don,

I don't tear too many of these things apart anymore so my memory on this is foggy. I 'think' there is a clip on the center shaft holding the clockspring lockplate to the column. I think you'll need to push downward slightly to gain access to the clip and you'll need a 90 degree pointed pick to get it out. Getting it back in is more difficult, there is an actual tool you need to attach to the center shaft that pushes the assembly down giving you the ability to replace the clip. in absence of the tool which you can probably borrow at your local NEW auto parts supplier like AutoZone, Advance Auto or NAPA, you'll probably need another person to help with installation. This isn't a part they want the average consumer to be able to remove as it is a vital part of the SRS System.

I'm not too sure how accurate the instructions are here so make sure to look at it real good before tearing something apart and possibly damaging it. An entire column for your vehicle would be upwards of $100 to $150 so I'd be careful.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
