Auto Parts: 4.3 vortec rebuild wont start, blown head gasket, dowel pin

Question
Howdy- I have just finished rebuilding my 97 Bravada's 4.3 after a blown head gasket. New gaskets, kept what I could, replaced what I had to. Now it's all buttoned up, and won't start. It'll crank weakly, and about once every firing cycle I get a "Phffsshhht" sound from the engine and a poof of vapor. The last one looked like oil smoke. WHat am I doing wrong?
I need this thing to run asap for as little $$$ as possible. Don't we all?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Dave,

Standing where I am, it's difficult to tell. If you are hearing a pressure/compression release, I'd have to say something is out-of-place. I know you don't want to hear this, but I think you're going to need to start taking it back apart until you find out where the error is.

You already know this but I'll say it anyway, start by finding out where and what vapor is being released. It may be something as simple as a rippled intake gasket or as sinister as a smashed-sideways dowel-pin that is torqued between the head and block.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
