four wheel drive works sometimes when it quits all you have to do is un hook the neg. cable and it works for a little while again what could it be

Sounds like you may have a transfer case motor malfunction. I'm assuming you have auto-lock hubs and push-button 4WD. Could be a bad Neutral Safety Switch also. Try wiggling the shifter in park and neutral while engaging/dis-engaging the 4WD as it is experiencing the problem and see if that helps.
