Car Alarms: Alarm in 1998 Toyota 4Runner, toyota 4runner, fcc id

Question
Hi.  Thanks for your expert answers... I find myself in need!
I just purchased the 4Runner from extended family member.  No known alarm issues previously.  Yesterday, I had to have emissions checked (underhood connection of some kind).  While car was running and the testing was underway, I heard the car's horn begin to occasionaly chirp.  Following the test, the attendant shut the hood and turned off the car.  When I tried to start the car, the car's horn began honking, and the car would not start (alrm working "properly" I assume, but why?).  I eventually got the car out of the bay by disconnecting the battery (noise) and switching the 4WD transfer case shifter to neutral and pushing it outside.  Assuming the fob battery was dead, a family member brought me an alternate fob, I reconnected the battery, and things seemed ok... I drove a few more errands without problem.
Today, I went to drive the car, and all the symptoms were back... car wouldn't start, and car's horn honking on trying to crank the engine.  I pulled the horn fuse this time to help troubleshoot quietly.

Other observations:
Fob is an Auto Mate, FCC ID: EZSDEI476.  I have not spotted any observable part of the alarm system, except two items on the dash:  one is a red plastic LED bead (no moving parts), which appears to be OEM (?).  The other is a small (1" X 2") plastic rectangle with 4 buttons on it.  The 3 upper buttons operate the sunroof, which may be aftermarket.  The bottom button is labeled "asc" with a round logo preceeding the letters.

I believe the LED flashes when the doors are locked, but I think it also flashes after I get into the car and am about to be rudely surprised by the alarm activating when I try to crank the engine.  The "asc" button glows red sometimes, but I haven't figured out when/why.  My best guess is that getting it to glow red facilitates turning off the alarm if done in conjunction with some other step, which I haven't done enough times successfully to figure out.

I have managed to temporarily turn off the alarm and start the car, but don't know how/for how long.  For the moment, I have removed the horn fuse, because it gives me a chance to tinker (I can hear a blinker-sounding noise coming from the dash when the horn would be honking otherwise).

Your advice or direction to a previous post would be greatly appreciated!  Could a motion detector set off by slamming the hood be part of the problem?  Thanks!
